Patience

I really needed to read this today.

Nasty Rash

Poor Emma.  She started getting a rash yesterday, but it's not that unusual for her.  She gets them when she's teething or even when she gets too hot.  But this morning when I got her up....holy cow.  She looked awful.  It was all over her arms, legs, hand, feet and face.  I was afraid she had chicken pox, because she would only sit still if I scratched her back or legs.  Either that or she had an allergic reaction to peanut butter (although we first gave it to her one week ago today, so that would have been a delayed reaction), which made me paranoid that she was going to swell up and stop breathing.  We got in to see the doctor this morning and turns out it is a virus.  And I can't do anything for her, besides Benadryl which doesn't seem to do much for her.  She doesn't seem to feel bad, other than the itching this morning.  And she fell asleep with me this morning, which was nice (she hates to sit still and cuddle anymore).  Of course, now she's laying in her crib wide awake, but oh well.  And ll she ate for lunch was applesauce.  Oh the joys of parenting a (strong willed) toddler.

Pictures

Here are a few pictures from our summer.

I have a toddler!

So, I keep vowing to update my blog more often.  Obviously I'm failing at that.  But I have a good reason.  Emma is keeping us busy these days.  She's not walking yet, but I would definitely call her a toddler now.  She has completely dropped her second nap, and right now takes one nap at about 11:15.  I've been able to start playpen time in the afternoon for an hour a day, which is awesome.  We tried a few months ago and she just cried and cried, but now she plays with her toys.  When she gets bored, she cuddles with her stuffed dog.  It's a nice little rest period for her and a good break for me!  Our biggest issue right now is feeding.  She used to eat anything and everything, especially her fruits and veggies.  However, for probably 2 weeks or so, she has hardly been eating anything.  Absolutely no fruits and veggies.  Even the foods she loved she won't touch.  She knocks the spoon or fork out of our hands, and if we let her feed herself, she drops everything in the floor.  I'm trying to let her feed herself a lot more, because I know she wants to start being more independent.  But she seems to have no appetite.  I know this is fairly normal with toddlers, but she's on the small side to begin with and she's not putting on any weight.  She has started eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but today she didn't want that either.  Needless to say, mealtime is stressful in our home right now.  Emma is crawling everywhere and she loves pushing her push toys all over the house.  She tries to pull up on everything and clearly she wants to be walking.  She talks like crazy!  She is constantly babbling ("zaps" is her new favorite word), and she knows several actual words now (hi, bye bye, ball, bubbles, dog, ruff ruff, mama, dada, book, truck, milk, all done).  She imitates us all the time.  She is still learning signs; she has more, eat, milk, eat and sleepy (or nap or bedtime) down, and we're working on please and thank you now.  Her favorite new thing to do is to put toys in containers.  She puts her shape toys in the sorter (not the right ones yet, but she's trying); in fact, she puts everything in something.  I found her baby doll's hat in her shape sorter toy yesterday.  She knows to put the basketballs in the goal; she puts her cars in our shoe container.

Besides the eating issue, we're doing great.  She is almost always tons of fun to be around.  She's getting a little sense of humor, which is so funny.  She loves to swim and we've had fun this summer in both the little pool and some big pools.  Our hotel in Chicago has an indoor pool, so she'll be able to swim more there.  I'm really looking forward to our trip, even though it will be pretty short.  I need a vacation!

4th of July

We enjoyed a nice long weekend for the 4th.  The fireworks at the Corvette Museum are close enough to our house that we can sit on our front porch and watch them, so that's what we did.  We put Emma to bed early and she slept right through them.  We did take her to Barren River Lake on Sunday for their fireworks, but she wasn't too happy about it.  9:00pm is a little too late for her, so she was a little fussy by the time the fireworks started.  However, she loved having Daddy home for 3 whole days.  Maybe by next year, she'll enjoy the fireworks more.

It's hard to believe, but I'm already getting information on preschool for Emma.  Several places have programs for 2 year olds, so I'm looking into a few.  We might still wait until she's 3, but I think a 2 day a week program would be good for her next year.  It seems crazy to even be talking about preschool...she's still a baby!

We also had her IFSP meeting with First Steps yesterday.  She'll start working with a therapist next week.  In the 5 weeks since I first called Lifeskills, she's started crawling, walking with us holding her hands, puling up and cruising.  So I don't think it will be long before she's walking on her own, but it will still be good to have someone come work with her.  It's so amazing how quickly she's changed in the past month.  She definitely is still going through the separation anxiety (she still cries when we drop her off at the church nursery), but it's so much midler now.  When we go to the library and music class, she can't wait to get out my lap and crawl around.  Today she refused to let me hold her.  Somehow that makes me both happy and sad.  She's definitely spoiled, and has started really getting into her temper tantrums (complete with kicking and head banging).  We are going to have our hands full.

We've been trying to take her swimming several times, but I'm having a hard time finding places to go.  We have our little pool in the backyard, but sometimes we just want to go to a big pool!  The water park gets too expensive to go very often (and it's way crowded), Indian Hills is a bit out of our price range, and Southland has a waiting list and apparently requires recommendations from members.  Hopefully we will put in a pool at our next house, but that's a little ways off.

Nick and I have been talking about taking Emma to Disney next summer.  I had thought we would wait until she was closer to 4 or 5, but  think she would still have fun at 2.  Also, we could rent a house or condo in Orlando for a lot cheaper than I thought.  I'm hoping we can go to Beaches Turks & Caicos when she's 3, but it's a little pricey.  If I'm going to pay that much for a vacation, I'd rather go back to Hawaii.  Although I can't imagine a 3 year old on a 8+ hour flight.  Nick is cranky enough.

My Dad got us free tickets to the Braves - Reds game in Cincinnati at the end of the month.  Hopefully they'll still be in 1st place then...also, hopefully Chipper will manage to be healthy enough to play.
