Emma is here!

Emma Katelyn Addington was born at 8:12 this morning. She weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces. We're all doing well, especially Emma, who has been sleeping most of the day. I'm tired and very sore, but hopefully the medicine they're going to give me soon will help. The stuff I've had so far has not been the best (except for the epidural!). Supposedly I will have everything unhooked tomorrow, and be able to walk around. While I'm not looking forward to that, I think I'll feel better once I do. Emma is awesome! She has been very sleepy, and not too interested in much else. But she has opened her eyes a couple times and tried to focus on us. She has pretty dark blue eyes. Here are a couple pictures. Hopefully more will be coming tomorrow, when we are all less tired.

Pictures

We had our last ultrasound and doctor's appointment today. Everything is good...the fluid level is normal now, and she got a perfect score on her biophysical profile. But she still hasn't turned, so it's for sure going to be Wednesday. I'm looking forward to having Nick home for 2 whole weeks to help me. The doctor said we might be home Friday, Saturday at the latest. I am very nervous about the actual operation, but ready to meet Emma! And ready to not be pregnant, and feel my hands again, and fit in my clothes. Hopefully our wireless will work at the hosptial so we can post an update...I'm sure that will be the first thing on our minds!

Lots of News

I haven't posted in a really long time. The wireless internet still doesn't work at home. And things have been kind of busy. This past Sunday was my first Mother's Day. Unless you count the dogs, who I do. But most people don't. I did get a nice card from them this year, and also from Nick and Emma. Also I got some pretty irises and candy. We went to Mariah's and then took the dogs to the dog park. Nick doesn't really like the dog park, but I do. And it wasn't raining, amazingly enough. We met another couple from our ABF class, but there were lots of other people there too. The dogs had lots of friends to play with. The weekend before that, Nick planned out a date for the two of us in Nashville. Nick usually doesn't plan much, so it was a surprise. He made reservations at Maggiano's (which was good because it was prom), and then we went to a movie. He also gave me a bracelet. So far, it has one heart charm with Emma's name engraved on it. It will cool to add to it. Nick picked it out and had it engraved all by himself. Without me finding out. So that was our last little trip/date night before Emma is here.

As for Emma, we have had an exciting past week. We went to the doctor last Thursday, and everything was ok. Emma's heartbeat was good, which it has always been. I was 1 cm dilated. Nick was convinced that her head was high, near the top of my uterus. I was hoping it was the other end of her that we were feeling. Apparently not. She's breech. The dr. sent us for an ultrasound, just to confirm, which it did. At the u/s, the technician told us the amnoitic fluid was lower than the dr. liked. She couldn't really tell us anything more than that, so we left not really knowing what was going on. On the way home, I got a call from the tech and also the dr. Long story short, we were scheduled for weekly biophysical profiles (which is an u/s they do to look at and score certain features) and told to go to Labor & Delivery for a nonstress test. We did and Emma was fine. Today we went back for the u/s and dr's visit. Apparently the fluid still scores low according to the Amnoitic Fluid Index, but it's actually because my fluid isn't located in the correct places. So there is enough, which is a relief. I ate donuts before the appt, so Emma was moving a lot when we got there. They allot 30 minutes for the profile, and we were done in less than 8. We could see her taking practice breaths, and opening and closing her hands. It was pretty cool. She seems to be healthy as can be. But she is still breech. So they have scheduled us for a c-section on Wednesday at 7:30am. The idea of a c-section is scary to me, and not something I really thought much about until recently. But I'm also ready to meet Emma, and to not be pregnant. And if this is how she needs to be born, then there is some reason for it. Maybe God doesn't think I could handle labor! So Emma's birthday will be May 20th. I am excited to meet her, but nervous. I wasn't nervous until now. Nick will be off with me for a couple of weeks, so that will be nice. He's very excited, and apparently thinks it will be just like the dogs. Just something else to play with. Thank goodness I was so anal about getting everything done early, even though it still feels like we have a million things to do. The nursery is ready, diapers are there, bags are packed and in the car, car seat installed. My last day of work is tomorrow, so I'll be off Monday and Tuesday to take care of everything else. Or sleep.

Anyway, I wanted to update, since I hadn't in so long. Hopefully we'll have pictures up by Wednesday night, although that will probably be up to Nick. My birthday is this Saturday, and Mikaela's is the 29th. She's excited about some Scrabble game for PS2, so she has low expectations for her b-day. She will love my present. And June 2nd is our 2 year wedding anniversary. Nick says we should plan this better next time...May is too busy.

Blogs

I've come across these blogs recently. This isn't exactly the ideal time for me to be reading them, but it does make me grateful that everything has been great with Emma up to this point. And it makes things like numbness in my hands seem pretty trivial. I just want Emma to come home healthy.

Our due date is exactly 4 weeks from this Friday. Unbelievable. Part of me still wonders what I'm going to do with a baby. I don't know anything about babies. It's terrifying.

Courtney!

http://www.theledger.com/article/20090423/COLUMNISTS/904235070/1117/SPORTS?Title=Lee-Is-Stepping-Up-for-Magic

I'm still a little bitter that Nick wouldn't let me name Emma Courtney Lee.  But I'm pretty sure he's just jealous (Courtney is only 3 years younger than us, starting in the NBA playoffs and getting paid millions...).  At least I got something autographed while I could.  Not that I'd sell it now.  But it's kind of cool that someone I used to see everyday is doing so well in the NBA.

Nat Geo

Forgot to mention...last night (actually early this morning) as I was lying on the couch and not sleeping, I did get to watch a cool show on National Geographic about volcanoes.  It talked about Hawaii's volcanoes, but also what could potentially happen to the earth because of our volcanoes.  Pretty much we're all going to be extinct one day, killed by either a super volcano or a monster tsunami.  I always like watching shows about Hawaii, so it was cool.  As cool as a tv show can be at 3:00am.

Ick

So it seems like the days of having a (relatively) easy pregnancy are over.  I have apparently developed carpal tunnel, which makes typing all day lots of fun!  Actually daytime is preferable to nights, where my hand and arm hurts and yet is numb at the same time.  According to Wikipedia:  Night symptoms and waking at night--the hallmark of this illness--can be managed effectively with night-time wrist splinting in most patients. So tonight I'm going to buy a brace.   I've also read that I can rest my hand for 2 weeks, take aspirin, have shots, or have surgery.  So let's hope the splint works.  I know it will go away after Emma is born, and is because of the swelling, and exacerbated by my typing.  I have developed an ear infection too.  I went almost 27 years and never had one, but it really hurts.  Now I know why little kids scream when they get them.  For real, I wish I could do that.  I also think that some of my vitamins keep me up.  My prenatal vitamin used to affect my sleep, so I changed when I took it.  Now I am taking iron too, which makes me feel weird sometimes.  Also, Sydney apparently has a urinary tract infection.  Which means another meaningless visit to the vet, a big bill and antibiotics that don't work.  Awesome.

Other than not sleeping, having carpal tunnel and an ear ache, and a sick dog, everything is great!  We had our first shower last week and got some cool stuff.  Our bags for the hospital are packed (mostly) and the nursery is finished.  My birth plan is done (I think), and I'm going to go over it with the doctor today.  Emma is still moving like crazy.  I thought I was supposed to feel her less as she had less room to move, but apparently no one told her.  The doctor always has a fun time listening to her heart, because she moves away every time.  But apparently her heart rate increases after she moves, which is good.  She gets the hiccups a lot now.  I feel bad for her...the hiccups are no fun.
